This article discusses net art- what it is, and how it has evolved into what it is today. Net art refers to art and media that is consumed digitally. As we previously discussed in class, net art is fleeting, its intended purpose is not to last forever. I find this to be a very interesting concept as a very big focus for a lot of traditional artists is to make art that is archival and can be accessed and viewed for a significant amount of time after it has been created. A large chunk of net art that has been created in recent decades is already lost due to the unreliability of many software programs including Adobe Flash, which was home to thousands of pieces of art that are no longer accessible since the software shut down. The concept of net art is interesting to me because it urges artists to create freely without consequence, as many of the pieces created will be lost eventually. I feel that a lot of the time when I make art it has to be good enough for an audience, and that it has to compare to other pieces that have become famous, viral, infamous, etc. However, net art puts things in a different perspective and makes me realize that in the grand scheme of things, art should be created for the enjoyment that we get from the process, not for the praise or reward that might come from showing others.
