The article "Searching for Silence" speaks about John Cage and his exploration of alternative usage of sound and music. When most people think of music, they think of a constant, structured, often repetitive format that most songs follow. John Cage chose to remove many of these structures and experiment with sound and frequency in a way that many people see as unconventional or unorthodox. His work insights a larger discussion about our society today, how we are constantly consuming different types of media and surrounded by "sound" of all different types, and how much of the content and media we consume on a daily basis is repetitive and we, for the most part, know what to expect. John Cage's work pushes the audience to rethink what music is, and how we can use music to provoke different thoughts and emotions. I feel that Cage's work is more similar to an auditory soundscape or story rather than music, or what we typically think of as music. Cage states "There's no such thing as silence". This statement implies that even when listening to a piece that is not conventionally formatted, or as "full" as we expect songs to be, we can still listen and gather new information from simpler, quieter pieces. John Cage's work pushes us to listen in on what we may not be hearing in his avant-garde work, but also in our everyday lives and in all types of media that we frequently consume.
