Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the ‘Bain d' Images’ Era” written by Maria Avgerinou discusses the concept of visual literacy and it's importance as the majority of the content and media we consume is rapidly shifting to the digital world. Digital literacy refers to the ability to properly interpret, use, and create new media and content. This concept is a very pressing one in our society, as visual media both online and in real life is extremely common and an unavoidable part of most people's every day lives. While this article was written over a decade ago, it is still very relavent as the vast majority of our information and entertainment comes from digital sources, where visual literacy is extremely important. The article stresses the importance of teaching newer generations visual literacy so that they can successfully navigate the digital world and maintain a solid sense of self, which becomes more and more pertinent as the advancement of technology progresses. The amount of media and content we consume every day can become overwhelming, misinformation can be easily spread, and self image issues can arise without proper visual literacy and self management. The author also points out that being
exposed to the digital world at an early age, and spending lots of time online does not necessarily equate to visual literacy as it is still a skill that must be learned. As school, jobs, and social third spaces continue to migrate further into the digital world, visual literacy becomes more and more of an essential skill for survival in todays society. "So far, this author has advanced the view that
the world is currently on the threshold of a new status quo—the hegemony of the image. Yet, this
seems a mixed blessing, for people, and especially young people, are not equipped with the necessary critical viewing and thinking skills to survive it. Nevertheless, this unfortunate situation can and should be altered. To achieve this aim, we need to use our most powerful weapon, that is, the concept of VL."
